What’s wrong with the lean startup methodology? | TNW News

I wholeheartedly agree and believe this to be true whether your product is digital or physical. The drive for immediacy and minimalism can paralyse creativity, this is especially true to products driven by art such as clothing. When a woman buys a £2,000 dress from Mary Katrantzou, she is not just buying a piece of clothing, she is buying into the artistic vision of the designer.

The Chain Breaker: A Dairy Queen Like No Other | Serious Eats

20150527-moorhead-dq-dilly-2-jackie-varrianoWhen the DeLeons took over, the original 1949 contract transferred, meaning the Moorhead DQ doesn’t have to adhere to many strict company rules. Had they signed a newer contract, they would have had no choice but to discontinue their barbecue sandwiches and Polish dogs and launch a full Orange Julius menu like many newer DQ franchises. Thanks to their old-school contract, the Moorhead DQ still pays the original 1949 royalties rate on Dairy Queen treats that they order from the corporate warehouse. Perhaps most importantly, DeLeon is able to source ingredients from outside providers and still make many desserts in-house.

A Strange Coincidence | Peter Mehit

I was working some sequencer loops for a song idea with Chad Vandever’s storm chase running in the background.  As he got closer to a tornado, I stopped what I was doing and watched the encounter, which ended badly for him.

It wasn’t until later that I realized that I had recorded both the song loop and the chase audio together, including the last few moments of his live stream.

I Am Truly The Worst | Peter Mehit

20141209_102645

My daughter is a trainer and wholesale relationship manager for Four Barrel coffee, an independent coffee roaster in San Francisco.  Through my daughter’s work, I’ve learned that there is an extremely passionate world around the constellation of similar roasters such as Blue Bottle, Sight Glass and Intelligencia.  It is a world of cuppings, flavor notes and events that rival the wine world.  This universe has its hipster Robert Parkers, high price tag offerings and barista competitions where winners walk off with $50,000 prizes.

But we’re not going to talk about that world.  Last Saturday night, Dinosaur Coffee, a shop that features Four Barrel’s coffees, had a parody event called the “First Annual World’s Worst Coffee Competition”.  Michelle, the owner, has built a wonderful space that has already become a hit in the neighborhood.  It was the perfect stage for the event.

The official judges rubric evaluated the coffee based on quality (one measure, pleasant to disgusting), the performance of the competitor and originality.  There were seven competitors and the point was to produce the worst possible coffee imaginable.  The audience and judges were not disappointed.

Business Couple Peter and Lydia Mehit Talk Tips In Starting a Business | UC Irvine Blackstone LaunchPad

IMAG01788Lydia mentioned to always have targets. When people talk to their weak ties, they need to have a specific person they are trying to reach for. It’s important to look up whom they want to work with.

“Once you have the connection, you have to tell people exactly how you want them to help you,” Peter said. “You need to be specific. I wish I had learned this sooner.”

Peter later mentioned the importance of learning your business idea well enough that you can talk about it without any hesitation. He also said to not let other people’s limitations stop you from doing what you need to get done.

Revolva: Vaudeville hula hoop act, circus performer An open letter to Oprah, whose ‘The Life You Want’ tour asked me to work for free | Revolva

OprahDear Oprah:

No effing way. I could not believe it when a producer from Harpo Studios got in touch last week, asking if I could perform at your “The Life You Want” San Jose tour stop.  I mean, OPRAH WINFREY! I’ve always wanted to hear, “Welcome Revollllllvaaaaa,” as I cartwheeled onstage, to tell you my life story—the profundity of all my lingering student loan debt causing you to weep and then declare to America that I am your new BFF. (Sorry, Gayle!)

And the title of your tour: The life you want? Um, hello! As a performer, writer and activist, I’ve spent 12 years taking a million chances, attempting to live in alignment with my spirit, rather than our toxic culture. I’ve spoken up as a survivor. I’m the female comedy act in a space helmet. You want me in your lineup, right? Your producer was totally calling to add me to  your list of “trailblazers,” including Deepak Chopra and Elizabeth Gilbert, right?!?

Ah, but Oprah, you are a wise woman. I should have known that, in the phone call with your producer, there was a deep spiritual lesson in store for me

The Science Of Spanking: What Happens To Spanked Kids When They Grow Up? | Up Worthy

You know what the most annoying thing in the world is when you are a parent? Other people telling you what to do as if they know better. Backseat parenting drives me crazy. Until I’m the one doing it. I have dear friends who spank their kids, and I always try to talk to them about the science of it. They always respond with, “I know what’s best for my kids, just like you know what’s best for yours.” Which is exactly what I’d say if someone told me that I was doing it wrong. Every kid is different. Every kid has their needs.

The SBA and Betide | Jim Ely

betide

bi-TYD

To happen.

From Old English tidan (happen), from tid (time).

Betide is often shortened to tide or tidings.  Such as when Luis Van Pelt declared in a Charlie Brown Christmas: “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy!”

TIP OF THE WEEK

Good tidings for the restaurant industry.

Driven by stronger sales and traffic and a more optimistic outlook among restaurant operators, the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) posted a solid gain in October. The RPI – a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry – stood at 102.8 in October, up 1.8 percent from its September level. In addition, the RPI stood above 100 for the 20th consecutive month, which signifies expansion in the index of key industry indicators.

According to the SBA, restaurants obtain more SBA 7(a) loans that any other business type.

If you would like a copy of the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Performance Index for October let me know.
